Kane Bond asked Oaktown Town Council members about making some minor additions to the town's water system.

Bond owns the co-op property at 401 N. Park St. and is selling about three acres of the property to Delta Fresh Sales, a watermelon brokerage firm out of Jonesboro, Ark.

Paul Teague, a representative with Delta Fresh, asked council members if there were a way to install a six inch water line, water hydrant and meter up Russell Street to where they are planning to put a building for seasonal loading and off-loading of watermelon.

"We are going to try to be built before the summer season," Teague said. "We hope to get ground broken and have the building project up by mid-April."

Council members said they would get estimates on what the cost of materials would be to extend and expand the water line and would vote on the issue at their next meeting at 7 p.m. on March 5.

Oaktown Pays Water Treatment Project Bills
Town council members here are in a good mood after approving claims that pay off most of the expense from their new water treatment project. “We approved claims and most of the project is paid off,” said Clerk-treasurer Carol Beaman. “We may have one more bill but for the most part I think we are done.”

The council was able to secure a Department of Commerce grant for $525,000 for the project and the difference was made up from a loan from USDA Rural Development. Included in their $1.3 million project is the construction of a water treatment facility, digging two wells, installing water meters at customer residences and laying four mile of line.

Because they learned that the project would cost less than initially thought, council members approved installing 1.2 miles of water line on Freelandville Road. Council members also approved replacing a storm sewer at Wabash Avenue. Council members will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. On Sept. 19 to adopt their 2008 budget.

Vectren Fuels will be operating a coal mine east of Oaktown. Planned operation date is 2009.

Oaktown has new wells pumping its own water and new radio-read water meters. The town is currently involved in a $1.3 million construction project which includes building a new water treatment facility, digging two wells and laying four miles of line. After learning its improvement project is going to cost less than first thought, Oaktown will be able to extend
water lines even further.
