HELP Needed for OLD OAKEN DAYS ~ Festival in Danger of Ending?
OAKTOWN - Cassiy Eubank, president of the Greater Organization for Oaktown Development, says residents here have celebrated Old Oaken Day for many years, but if she doesn't get some help with the festival, that may all end.

"This is a community event and three people cannot do it all," she said with exasperation. "Last year, with the help of a few, I managed to plan the whole thing in about a month and it about killed me. I will not do that again." Eubank is hoping her plea will reach other residents of Oaktown and that volunteers ready and willing to help will attend a meeting at 7 P.M., MONDAY, APRIL 7 at the Community building.

"We are in the planning stages of the festival which will be held the last weekend in June," she said. "I'm just having so much trouble getting help with it this year but I'm hoping in the end the folks in town will come together and it will all work out. Year after year we've managed to pull it off - hopefully no one here is going to let Old Oaken Days die." The three-day event is centered around a huge softball tournament that usually sees an average of 16 teams participating and the annual parade that winds through town "We also have the Oaktown Queen, Little Miss and Little Mister contests," Eubank said. "The Oak Village is bringing back their hog roast and the fire station will have a community dinner. The Youth Foundation will hold a pancake breakfast, we will have kids games on Main Street and live bands." Two features coming back this year are the scavenger hunt and Road Rally, which Eubank said were very popular last year. "The kids love it," she said. "It's for kids ages 10 to 15 and they are given a list of not easily found, detailed objects to find and they have to perform certain tasks to get those items. If they get them all, they'll get a surprise." Older kids ages 16 and up can participate in the Road Rally. "It's like the scavenger hunt only the teens need a vehicle to drive to different places to find hidden items we've left out in the country," she said.

Last year's winner for the Oaktown Junior Miss pageant was Daisy Cardinal. Junior Mister was Connor Liston. The Little Miss winner was Page Liston and Little Mister was Alex Obermeier. Heather Thomas, 15, was crowned the Oaktown Queen. "It was a bigger festival last year and it has the potential to be even bigger this year but we need help," Eubank said. "My hope is that the younger generation will step up and get involved. "It's just too fun of a festival to see it done away with."

For more information about how to help with the festival contact Eubank at 812-899-2384.
